Aucayacu, a paradise to discover

Aucayacu is a Peruvian town, capital of the José Crespo y Castillo district, located in the province of Leoncio Prado, in the department of Huánuco. It is located north of Tingo María, in the middle part of the Huallaga River, between the Cordillera Azul National Park and the eastern slope of the Andes Mountains. Talking about Aucayacu is talking about the Peruvian Amazon: its biodiversity, customs, art and the warmth of its people. Aucayacu is preparing for tourism; Its natural and cultural resources are part of a varied tourist offer. For many years, this town suffered from terrorism and drug trafficking, but today its people once again believe in peace, tranquility and new alternatives for economic development, including tourism.

Tourism activity in Aucayacu is being promoted by initiatives from both the public and private sectors. You can now find qualified tourism providers, including lodging establishments categorized up to two stars and three-star hostels, two-star restaurants and excursion organizers such as Primarios Tours, pioneers in the sector.

The cultural and natural wealth of Aucayacu is a great tourist attraction. A typical tour begins in the Main Plaza, which stands out for its artistic sculptures and the conservation of tree species such as the cetico. The term "Aucayacu" has a Quechua origin, where the Incas called "aucas" to the Indians or chunchos who inhabited the eastern slopes of the Andes and preferred the wild and nomadic lifestyle of the jungle. This spirit is captured in the sculpture "El Auca" sculpted by the young Fine Arts artist, Leo Robert Verde Tolentino. Located on the Malecón Puerto La Colpa, this work represents an Amazonian warrior five meters high, made of cement, plaster, concrete and fiberglass. The boardwalk is also an ideal place to appreciate local crafts and taste Amazonian cuisine, especially during the San Juan festival, the busiest in the region.

Among the natural attractions of Aucayacu is Jacob's Pool, located in the Túpac Amaru hamlet. Its waters come from underground and miraculous properties are attributed to it. This spring, known for its bubbling waters, extends for about thirty meters. The Salto del Tigre Waterfall, also in the Túpac Amaru hamlet, is ideal for hiking lovers. After an hour of walking through the jungle, you reach this 52-meter-high waterfall, made up of three waterfalls and a natural pool. The Cotomonillo Cave, located in the hamlet of the same name, is a natural cavity with two main chambers, where you can see stalactites and stalagmites formed by the filtration of water and the wear of the limestone rock. In the hamlet of Yacusisa, about fifteen minutes from the city of Aucayacu, is the Mirador de Yacusisa, built by the entrepreneur Oliberth Ushñahua Ponce. This natural viewpoint, located five hundred meters above sea level, offers a panoramic view of the city and the splendor of the Amazonian plain, surrounded by ornamental vegetation, timber and fruit trees, ideal for capturing photographic memories.
